Chronic Head, Neck and Facial Pain
Dr. Allen Sprinkle has spent a lifetime preparing for the revolutionary work he is now doing in the areas of chronic head, neck and facial pain. His professional journey from traditional to alternative dentistry began while studying under some highly recognized physicians and dentists.
He was fortunate to be a student of Dr. Janet Travell, recognized for her work with chronic pain. She was one of President John F. Kennedy's physicians and her texts on Chronic Pain are the definitive works in the field that she started. During Dr. Sprinkle’s five years of study, she was able to pass on to him her many insights and treatments.
Following his study with Dr. Travell, Dr. Sprinkle continued his training with John Upledger, D.O. at the Upledger Institute in Florida. From Upledger he learned the basics of cranio-sacral therapy. While there, he was introduced to Dietrich Klinghardt, M.D., PhD, an orthopedic surgeon and PhD in the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Considered a world leader in Neural Therapy, Dr. Sprinkle studied with Klinghardt for seven years. During that time he learned Klinghardt’s technique of Neural Therapy in the treatment of chronic pain. The technique uses procaine, a weak oral anesthetic, to help restore balance to the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), the body's fight or flight mechanism.
In 1996 Dr. Sprinkle began studies with Dr. Yoshiaki Omura, a former professor at Columbia Medical School in New York and a member of the New York State Society of Medical Examiners. Omura was a member of the first surgical team in the United States to use acupuncture for anesthesia. Omura continued his breakthrough approach with the creation of the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test. This test is an accurate means of determining ANS interferences and disturbances. Dr. Sprinkle is a member of Dr.Omura’s first continum class which has met for the last 6 years to study and use the BDORT. During this time, he also learned that often the source of TMJ (TemperoMandibular Joint) pain and associated bone changes in the transmandibular joint, come from low-grade viral infections. Today, he continues to use the tests and techniques he learned from Omura in the treatment of chronic facial pain and trigeminal neuralgia. He has also brought new understanding of the link between clinching, the tightening of associated tissues in the mouth and neck, and the narrowing and obstruction of the patient’s airway. His insights make him a sought after speaker. He has spoken twice at the Southwestern Medical School National Trigeminal Neurological meeting and has been invited back to speak again this year. He will also be speaking at the annual Academy of Biological Dentistry meeting.
Sleep Disorder Dentistry
Today, Dr. Sprinkle continues to be a part of cutting edge education, research, and treatment in the field of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea sufferers have a greater risk for heart attacks and strokes. They also suffer from daytime drowsiness and short term memory. Oral appliances increase the patient's airway by moving the lower jaw forward, while bringing the tongue off the back of the throat. This increases the ease of breathing and lowers adrenaline levels and decreases the fight to flight response. The potential for changing health care and providing solutions to varied diseases and symptoms is unlimited. The appliance has eliminated nightmares, sleep apnea, and reduced blood pressure levels. It has corrected chronic snoring, and improved chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. The appliance has also reduced pain levels throughout the body, improved weight maintenance and increased energy levels.
